San Diego & Cross-Border Care

Why People Travel to San Diego for Stem Cells Instead of Mexico

August 31, 2026 · 8 min read

For years, the stem cell conversation in Southern California ended the same way: the price in the United States was out of reach, so people drove south. Tijuana, Rosarito, Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún built a whole medical tourism economy on that math, and for a while the math worked.

It works less well now. Patients from across San Diego County — and from Arizona, Nevada, and further out — are increasingly traveling to National City instead of across the border. The reasons are practical, and worth laying out honestly.

1. The price gap that justified the trip has closed

The original argument for Mexico was simple: U.S. clinics were quoting $15,000 to $30,000, and a Tijuana clinic quoted a fraction of that. When the difference is that large, a border crossing looks reasonable.

Our pricing is posted publicly rather than revealed in the room, and it is in the same neighborhood as a cross-border quote once you add up what the trip actually costs. When you factor in flights or fuel, hotel nights, meals, time off work, and a travel companion, the two numbers converge — and one of them does not require leaving the country.

Compare total cost, not headline cost. A quoted price abroad rarely includes travel, lodging, time away from work, or a second trip if follow-up is needed.

2. You can verify where the product came from

This is the difference that matters most and gets discussed least. Stem Cell RX uses umbilical cord–derived MSCs from an FDA-registered U.S. laboratory, with donor screening and documented sourcing you can ask to see.

Cross-border clinics operate under a different regulatory system, and product sourcing is frequently opaque to the patient. Cell count, viability, and processing standards may be described verbally and never documented. You are being asked to trust a claim rather than review a record. For something being infused into your bloodstream, that is a meaningful distinction.

3. Licensed U.S. providers and real oversight

Treatment here is administered by licensed U.S. healthcare professionals operating under California and federal oversight, with a medical director accountable for clinical protocols. That oversight is exactly what makes a clinic willing to tell a prospective patient no.

That accountability structure does not travel with you across the border. If something is unclear, mishandled, or simply does not match what was promised, your recourse in another country's legal and licensing system is limited in ways most patients never think through beforehand.

4. Follow-up care where you actually live

Most treatment days are uneventful. The questions come later — a week in, a month in, when you want to know whether what you are noticing is expected or whether something should be looked at.

Patients treated in National City call the same clinic and reach the same team that treated them. Patients treated abroad are usually left messaging a coordinator across a time zone, or explaining an unfamiliar protocol to a local physician who was not involved and has no records. The gap in aftercare is often the thing people regret, not the treatment itself.

5. The trip itself is harder than the brochure suggests

  • Border wait times at San Ysidro and Otay Mesa can consume hours in each direction, unpredictably.
  • Recovering or sedated patients are not ideal candidates for a long return crossing.
  • Travel insurance frequently excludes elective procedures performed abroad.
  • A companion has to take the same days off you do.
  • If a second visit becomes necessary, the entire cost and logistics repeat.

6. National City is genuinely easy to reach

Our clinic sits just off Interstate 5 in National City, minutes from downtown San Diego and Chula Vista, and a straightforward drive from Coronado, La Mesa, El Cajon, Bonita, Imperial Beach, and the South Bay generally. Patients come down from North County — Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido, Oceanside — and fly into San Diego International from out of state, which is a shorter door-to-door trip than most cross-border itineraries once the crossing is factored in.

For patients arriving from out of state, San Diego also happens to be a reasonable place to spend a couple of low-effort recovery days.

What we are not saying

We are not saying every clinic in Mexico is bad. Skilled, ethical physicians practice there, and some patients have had good experiences. What we are saying is that the specific reason people historically crossed — a price gap large enough to outweigh everything else — has narrowed, while the tradeoffs in sourcing transparency, oversight, and follow-up have not.

When the price is close, most people would rather be treated by licensed U.S. providers twenty minutes from home, with documented product and a phone number that reaches the same team next month.

Questions to ask either way

  • Where does the cellular product come from, and can I see the sourcing documentation?
  • Who is administering the treatment, and what license do they hold?
  • What is the total price, in writing, with nothing added later?
  • Who do I call at week two if I have a question, and will they have my records?
  • Under what circumstances would you tell me I am not a candidate?

MSC and exosome therapy are not FDA-approved for the treatment, cure, mitigation, or prevention of any disease. Every patient must complete a clinical evaluation with a licensed healthcare professional to determine whether therapy is appropriate. Results vary between individuals.
