Last week we wrote about why people travel to San Diego for stem cells instead of Mexico. The most common follow-up question we get is simpler and more practical: what do I actually gain by staying here? Not in principle — in the room, on the day, and in the weeks after.
This is that answer, written from a clinic that sits a short drive from the San Ysidro crossing and talks to people every week who have already priced out both sides of the border.
1. You can verify who is treating you
In California, the license of every physician and nurse practitioner is public. You can look up the name, the license number, the status, and any disciplinary history before you book, and you can do it in about two minutes from your phone. At Stem Cell RX your consultation and your procedure are handled by licensed U.S. clinical professionals under a California medical director.
Across the border, credentials may be perfectly legitimate, but they are far harder for a U.S. patient to verify independently, and in our experience the people who greet you at the door are often coordinators or drivers rather than clinicians. That difference in verifiability is not a small thing when someone is about to place a needle in your knee or an IV in your arm.
2. You get paperwork on the actual product
The single most important question in this field is what is in the vial. Our umbilical-derived MSC and exosome product comes from an FDA-registered U.S. laboratory, and you can ask for the lot documentation — cell count, viability, and sterility testing — before anything is administered. If a clinic cannot hand you that, you are buying a story rather than a product.
Cross-border clinics operate under a different regulatory framework, and the sourcing chain is often described verbally rather than documented. Staying local means the paperwork travels the same short distance the cells do.
3. Aftercare is a drive, not an international trip
Most people feel fine afterward. But if you have swelling at an injection site, a question about activity, or you simply want someone to look at it, being twenty minutes away changes everything. You call the same clinic, you speak to the same team, and if we want to see you, you come in that afternoon.
If something feels off three days after a procedure in Tijuana, your options are a phone call across a border, a second trip with a wait at the crossing, or a local urgent care provider with no records and no relationship with the clinic that treated you.
4. Your records stay in the U.S. system
Your primary care physician, your orthopedist, and any specialist you see later can request records from a California clinic through the normal channels. That continuity matters if you are managing anything long-term or considering a second session down the road. Records from a foreign facility, when they exist at all, often arrive incomplete or not at all.
5. The day itself is far less taxing
People underestimate this one until they have done it. A border day usually means an early departure, a wait southbound, a shuttle or an unfamiliar taxi, a facility you have never seen, and then the northbound crossing — which regularly runs one to three hours — on the same day you were treated.
Here, you park, you are seen, and you are home for lunch. For an IV session in particular, being able to rest afterward instead of sitting in a car lane is a genuine clinical courtesy.
6. The total cost is closer than the advertised price suggests
This is the part that surprises people most. Mexico's advantage used to be enormous. It is not anymore. Our pricing is published: $1,999 per vial, $3,999 for the injection and IV combination, $1,000 for the MUSE upgrade, and $1,000 for an exosome IV. There is no consultation fee.
- Fuel, parking, or a shuttle on both sides of the crossing
- A hotel night if the appointment is early or the return wait is long
- Meals and time off work for a full or multi-day trip
- A companion's travel, if you want someone along for the trip
- A second trip if a follow-up or a second session is recommended
Once those line items are added, the gap between a quoted Tijuana price and a published National City price can shrink to a few hundred dollars — and in some cases disappear. We also offer financing through Cherry and CareCredit, which is not typically available for care received abroad.
7. Recourse, if you ever need it
Nobody plans for this, and the vast majority of people never need it. But a California clinic answers to the Medical Board of California and to U.S. courts. A dispute with a facility in another country is, in practice, very difficult for an individual patient to pursue. Consumer protection is one of the quietest benefits of staying local and one of the most valuable.
8. An honest answer, including no
A licensed U.S. clinic is not permitted to promise you a cure, and we do not. Some people who consult with us are told that therapy is not appropriate for their situation. That constraint is a feature: an operation that has to stand behind its statements has an incentive to be accurate with you rather than enthusiastic.
MSC and exosome therapies are not FDA-approved to treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent any disease. Every patient must complete a clinical evaluation with a licensed healthcare professional to determine whether therapy is appropriate. Individual results vary.
What we would tell a friend
If the price difference were still what it was five years ago, the calculation would be harder. It is not. When the numbers are close, choosing verifiable licensing, documented product testing, a short drive to aftercare, and records that live in your own health system is not a premium — it is just the better version of the same decision.
If you want an exact price for your own situation and an honest read on whether this is even a reasonable option for you, a consultation with a licensed clinical professional at Stem Cell RX in National City is free, and you will leave knowing the number either way.
Frequently asked questions
- Is stem cell therapy cheaper in Mexico than in San Diego?
- Often not, once the full trip is counted. Our single-vial price is $1,999 and an injection-plus-IV plan is $3,999. Travel, lodging, time off work, and a second border crossing for follow-up can close much of the advertised gap.
- Can I verify my provider's license before booking in California?
- Yes. Every California physician and nurse practitioner license is public and searchable through the Department of Consumer Affairs license lookup.
- What happens if I have a question days after my procedure?
- You call the same National City clinic and speak with the team that treated you. If we want to see you, you come in — no border wait, no second flight.
